Use the Switchboard Window

Introduction:

When you construct a database using the Database Wizard, a Switchboard is created for you. The Switchboard window appears automatically after you create a database. You can begin entering data using the Switchboard, or you can use the Database window to do the same things. The Main Switchboard is a handy menu system for entering, viewing, and modifying information in your database. Some users find it easier to use the Switchboard to switch between Access tasks, while others prefer the Database window. You can decide which method you prefer. Just remember, either window can be used to perform Access tasks.

Step 1: View the Switchboard Window

The Main Switchboard window has buttons for performing specific database tasks. The buttons will vary based on the type of database you created. This figure shows a Contact Management database. To activate a button, such as Enter/View Contacts, click the button. The switchboard window: Thumbnail

Step 2: A Form Opens

Depending on which Switchboard button you select in step 1, a form or other database task window will appear. In this example, I selected the Enter/View Contacts button in step 1, so the Contact form opens onscreen, as shown in this figure. To return to the Switchboard, click the form's Close button. An open form: Thumbnail

Step 3: Close Only the Switchboard

To close the Switchboard window, click the window's Close button. This closes only the Switchboard window, not the database you were working on. Close the switchboard: Thumbnail

Step 4: View the Database Window

You can choose to use the Database window at any time, whether the Switchboard window is closed or opened. To maximize the Database window, click the Restore button on the minimized Database button. The database window

Step 5: The Database Window Restored

The Database window opens. If the Switchboard window is still open, the Database window appears on top of the Switchboard window. Restored database window: Thumbnail

Step 6: Exit with the Switchboard

If you're using the Switchboard to perform database tasks, you can also close your database using the Switchboard window. Simply click the Exit This Database button. Exit switchboard: Thumbnail
