Home Networking

Home Networking

Networking is a buzz word in the computer industry these days. Once a Local Area Network (LAN) was only found in industry where network technicians maintained the system and ensured all ran smoothly. Well things have moved on rapidly and more and more homes want or have their own little network keeping their computers in contact with each other

So What Is Home Networking?

In essence this simply means two or more computer devices can connect and communicate with each other. This communication can be at many different levels and can be achieved in a number of ways

Why Have Home Networks?

If you own more than one PC you have May already have considered the benefits of having them networked together. The advantages are considerable and could allow you to:

  • Share a single printer between computers
  • Share a single Internet connection among all the computers in your home
  • Access shared files such as photographs, MP3s, spreadsheets and documents on any computer in the house or even your laptop in the garden
  • Play games that allow multiple users at different computers
  • Send the output of a device like a DVD player or Web cam to your other computer(s)

As you can see there are many advantages to home networking and the good news is that it is now becoming cheaper as the popularity of such networks in the home increases

How Do You Do It?

Well that's a secret and I can't tell you (I'm only joking!!!!). The easiest way is to give me a call and we can discuss the best methods for your specific needs. However to put it simply it depends on the technology you will use for the network. The main technologies to choose between are standard Ethernet, phone-line-based, wireless and power-line-based. See it's easy really!!

Of course once you have decided on the technology, its method of implementation and installed the actual hardware then there is the simple step of configuring the different computers and their operating system to actually work together PHEW!!!!!

DONT PANIC!!!

We are here to help you. We can come out to your home and assess your existing hardware then discuss the options that are best suited to get your own home network up and installed. And don't worry once we have done the work and got it all working we realise that it is easy to forget what to do to get things the way you want. (It's called the nodding syndrome. You ask “do you understand it all now” and the customer always nods an affirmative). We are just a phone call away give me a ring and I can quickly get you sorted.
